Family caregivers play one of the most important roles in our communities. They provide daily care, emotional support, and stability for their loved ones, often without formal training or enough support.
This November, we take time to recognize their compassion and strength during National Family Caregivers Month.
Research from AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving shows that caregiving has become more demanding and longer term than ever before. Nearly one-third of caregivers have been providing care for five years or more, and many do it without training or much support. That’s why sharing resources and recognizing their efforts matters so much.
Ways to Support the Caregivers in Your Life
Give Them a Break – Offer to help with errands or spend time with their loved one so they can rest or recharge.
Listen with Empathy – Caregivers don’t always need solutions; sometimes they just need someone who understands.
Share Helpful Resources – Connecting them with programs or tools can make their caregiving journey a little lighter.
Helpful Resources for Family Caregivers in Texas
If you or someone you know is caring for a loved one, these programs can offer guidance and relief:
Strengthen the Care You Give (Texas HHS) – Practical training and tools to support caregivers.
Respite Care Video from Texas HHS – A short, seven-minute video that highlights the importance of taking time for yourself.
Texas Talks Toolkit – Resources to help families share caregiving duties and communicate more effectively.
VA Caregiver Support Program – Support for caregivers of military members and veterans.
Caregiving is an act of love, but no one should have to do it alone. This month, and every month, let’s make sure caregivers feel seen, valued, and supported.
